A lateral ankle sprain involves a stretch or tear of the ligaments on the outer side of the ankle. It usually happens when the foot rolls inward.
Sharp pain on the outer ankle.
Swelling and bruising around the lateral malleolus.
Tenderness when touching the outside of the ankle.
Difficulty bearing weight or a feeling of the ankle giving out.
Physical Exam
X-ray to rule out a fracture
Rest and activity modification to avoid further irritation.
Ice application for 15 to 20 minutes several times a day.
Compression using an elastic bandage to control swelling.
Elevation of the foot above heart level.
Early range of motion exercises like ankle circles or alphabet tracing.
Balance and proprioception training to prevent future rolls.
